Wood Plaque Art

You will need:

• A wood plaque/ board 
• A template
• Tracing or parchment paper
• Brown pencil crayons or permanent fine tip markers
• A pencil
• A blending tortillion
• Scissors
• Tape
• Glue (optional)
• Clear gesso (optional)
• A finishing coat/ spray (optional)
• A picture hanging kit (optional)

First you will need to choose a wood plaque and what template design you want to use. Once you have that figured out, measure and choose the right size template for your piece of wood. Each design pack has a large 2 page version measuring approximately 13"x 9" and a smaller version measuring approximately 8.5"x 6". You might need to resize one of the templates to fit your wood perfectly. Remember to leave some space around the edge of the wood. 

Once your template is the right size, print it out.

This step is only for if you are using a 2 page template. Roughly cut out around your template. Be more precise with your cutting on the line and tab that will later join the two pieces. Once you have it cut out, glue or tape the 2 pieces together. Make sure to match up the lines.

Cut a piece of tracing paper or parchment paper that extends slightly beyond your template.

Next clip or tape the tracing paper to your template. You might want to attach them to a hard surface like a masonite board. If you are using parchment paper make sure that the waxier side is facing down (do not trace the template on the waxy side). 

Begin to trace the template with a pencil. Trace towards your dominant hand to prevent smudging (if your right handed trace L-R). Once you have the entire template traced, remove the tracing paper from the template/board.

Before moving on to the next step, you might want to prime your wood with some clear gesso. Let the gesso dry completely and sand any rough spots before continuing.

Place your trace template pencil side down onto your wood and tape in place. Rub over the paper with a blending tortillion. Go over the image a few times, pressing firmly. Make sure your lines have transferred dark enough before removing the tracing paper from the wood.

Now go over your lines with brown permanent markers or pencil crayons.

When you're finished going over the entire image in brown you can go over your wood with your choice of finishing coat (like Mod Podge) if you want.

Once any finishing coat has dried you can add a hook into the back of the wood plaque for hanging.
