Majora's Mask Stained Glass Light Tutorial

Difficulty: Medium           ★★★☆☆

You will need:
  • an IKEA Synas light (link)*
  • clear decal paper (5 sheets)
  • thick black paper (larger than 8.5"x 11")
  • a ruler
  • a white pencil crayon/ something that will show up on dark paper
  • tape
  • scissors
  • a craft knife and/or rotary cutter (and surface protection)
*Instead of buying this particular light you could make your own using plexiglass and LED lights. The Templates are made to fit the Synas light so make sure anything you make is around the same size or adjust the templates to fit accordingly.

Start off by building your Synas light following manufacturer's instructions.

Trace the lid of the light onto some black paper, then cut out. Measure the thickness of the lid lip and subtract the measurement from around the edges of the paper. Trim paper until it fits snugly into the lid of the light.

Measure and mark rectangles 21cm x 22cm (measure the inside of your light box sides to make sure). You will need 4 of these rectangles. Cut out once drawn.

Print the stained glass templates onto your clear decal paper following manufacturer's instructions (template can be found here). Once you have the 5 pages printed, cut out each one outside of the black line.

Measure and mark centre on the wrong side (side with any pencil marks) of the 4 paper rectangles (not the lid paper). Measure and mark 1.5cm from the centre mark.

Flip one of the stained glass decals and line up the top of the decal with the mark 1.5cm from the top of the page. Trace the outline of the reverse image onto the paper. Once traced, cut out. Make sure not to cut into the square so that you have a solid boarder around the outline. Repeat for the other 3 rectangles/ decals. (The Majora's Mask decal is for the lid so trace the outlines of the Deku, Zora, Goron and Fierce Deity masks.)

Discreetly tape each cut out rectangle to the inside of the light (1rectangle per side). Make sure that the right side of the paper is facing outwards (pencil lines facing in). Do this for all 4 paper cutouts.

Peel off the backing of the decal paper. Line up and stick decal onto the outside side of the light with the corresponding paper cut out. Gently smooth out any air bubbles. Repeat for all 4 sides.

Flip the Majora's Mask decal facing down onto the lid paper. Centre the decal and trace the reverse outline onto the wrong side of the lid paper. Once traced, cut out. Again, don't cut into the border when cutting out the outline.

Discreetly tape the cutout paper square on the inside of the lid.

Line up and stick the last decal onto the outside of the lid.

Lastly, place the lid back onto the top of the light.

Now you have your finished Majora's Mask stained glass light!
